If you’re not heading out of town for a trip during Knox County fall break, you will likely be spending a little more time than normal at home this week. Here are some fun and creative ways to involve your kiddos in the organizing process at home:
Sort & Swap. Use the framework of designating each item in their room (closet, dresser, bookshelf, etc.) to one of the following categories: love it, outgrown it, donate it. Challenge them with a minimum number of items to donate to give them a goal.
Declutter Dance Party. You know the playlist that your kids can’t help but dance to, crank it up and set the example for how music can boost the mood and get you in the zone. Lead the way by explaining how meaningful it will be for other boys and girls to enjoy the books, toys, and gently loved clothes you no longer need.
Room Rearrange. Growing out of a crib into a big kid bed, adding a desk for homework to the bedroom, incorporating a new bookshelf, swapping out bedding, etc. Engage your kids in these shifts to their space as a celebration of growth and change.
Donation Challenge. Create a little competition between siblings, neighbors, or friends to build the excitement around giving a substantial amount of goods to a charity you support or a good cause that resonates with your values.
Remember
Involving kids and teaching responsibility, empathy, and independence is no small task.
Celebrate the small wins and be patient, it is a life long learning journey to do this well.
